Collateral History
Exploring Nevada History through Collecting
Am I a historian? Am I a collector? Yes, to both counts. Although I do not claim to be an expert to the first question or a major collector, I am serious about both.
It just so happens that collecting postal history, billheads, insulators, letters, stock certificates, arrowheads, bottles, photographs, post cards, badges, etc. all give the historian in me a chance to do a little investigating and learn something new. The one thing I have learned from doing this is that our history does not just belong to the Governors, millionaires, and the famous. It belongs even more to the common man and woman. Don't get me wrong, learning about the famous is fun. But I really enjoy piecing together the lives of people who were just trying to make a living, put a roof over their family's head, and deal the tragedies that we all face. I think that is the real history of who we are as Nevadans! So, why call this site Collateral History? Well the history I discover from the different artifacts was not intended. It is truly a collateral benefit! |
